Guide to Jackets & Coats - Pt. 2

Continuing on from Pt.1 of the top jackets and coats for AW12 here are a further 3 options to keep you cosy and dry this winter...

The Camouflage Print

Military has held it's place in both menswear and womanswear over the past few decades - From the classic pea coat to rugged military boots. While these choices are timeless others begin to flourish back into trend once again - with this season's camo print currently seen in almost every high street store.

Available in loads of different versions, from the oversized parka with fluffy hoods to the more unconventional choice of a tailored blazer. The key to pulling off this print is to team it up with neutrals - think denim, cream coloured knitwear, plain white tees or simply a palette of safari colours - burgundy being a 'colour pop' combo which compliments particularly well.

  The Duffle Coat

Another classic choice the duffle coat has been heavily endorsed on the runways for AW12 - Burberry, Carven and Marc Jacobs are just some of the few.

The coat owes its popularity to the British Royal Navy, who issued a camel-coloured variant of it as an item of warm clothing during World War I but the design was modified again slightly when it was widely issued during World War II to the swathes of army surplus.

Like the pea coat it works as a dual purpose coat for both office commuting as well as dress-down days - worn with a mix of organic textures - think rustic check shirts under an oversized chunky cable knits paired with slim fit tweed trousers - but the combination is pretty much endless if you opt for a neutral blue or black.

'A coat that gives the impression of prolonged preppyhood—of the boy not having quite grown into the man'...you'll look as cute as Paddington Bear!

The Parka

It seems one of the most popular outerwear pieces for the coming months has been the parka jacket, perhaps because of its 'ease' when it comes to versatile outerwear.

The parka was originally created and worn by Inuits and Eskimos for purely practical reasons of protection from wind chill and wetness in the Arctic regions of the world. Interestingly, traditionally parkas were worn by females, as the Inuit parkas contained a built-in baby pouch for carrying infants along with the stereotypical fur-lined hood - always something new to discover when it comes to the  history of fashion!

Looking to the high street, it is clear to see that parkas are popular and prevalent amongst affordable brands - the key is to really layer up to get the signature parka look - check shirt or polo over an aztec print jumper teamed with a rustic coloured chino and a pair of desert boots Parka - spot on!
