Guide to Jackets & Coats - Pt. 1

We're now into that time of year when the challenge is knowing what we 'need' and which one we 'want' - in other words some days we can cope with lighter outerwear, but then we have a sudden dip with temperatures plummeting to and from work so deciding which jacket or coat is most appropriate and how it will work with the look we are going for can be a challenge at times.

Choosing the right A/W jacket is never a decision to be made lightly - jackets are costly buys so your decisions have to be informed rather than spontaneous. The key thing to remember is how often you'll wear them and what you'll wear them with.

Over the next few weeks I'm going to be focusing on 6 must have coats and jackets for AW12. Here's Part 1 of my picks from the high street. *click on images to start buying!

The Bomber Varsity

The Bomber/Varsity was big hit last year, perhaps with the popularity of hit American teen drama GLEE. I remember back in the day watching Saved by the Bell and always used to find them pretty cool looking on guys. To work this look on casual days it's best to think of 80's college styling and mix it up with a preppy denim shirt or a simple tee and skinny bleached jeans. The choice is vast right now - from bold prints, leather, suede, wool or padded quilted versions for the colder days.

The Blazer

Heritage Blazers have been the gentleman’s jacket of choice this year. Unfortunately this is a look which is a challenge to pull off - it's not going to protect you too well from mother nature and it can often look 'overdone' for the typical male who isn't over 35. To get the look opt for wearing a chunky knit teamed with a shirt or a rolled neck jumper underneath, along with slim fit chinos in a bold contrasting Autumnal tone and a smart brogue or derby shoe to get the ultimate 'gentlemanly' look.

The Pea Coat

A jacket for both casual days and nights or worn over a tailored suit commuting from work. This is a piece of outerwear which has longevity so you shouldn't feel guilty about buying a high quality version. They not only look great on any male physique but also are ideal for keeping us warm and cosy. The pea coat is a clean, simple and elegant coat that suits any style and almost every occasion. It is versatile, easy to wear, and if you get a proper one, will keep out even the sharpest of winter winds.
